We’re taught in school about the eleven systems of the body; nervous, muscular, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, endocrine, lymphatic and the integumentary system. There is also the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Most people have never heard of this system unless they are a medical research scientist or work in the cannabis industry. Dustin Sylak, DO writes, “The endogenous cannabinoid system, named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health.” It was discovered in the 1990s by Israeli researcher Dr. Raphael Mechoulam.

This not well-known system is comprised of what are called cannabinoid receptors. Two distinct receptors have been identified, CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptor is mostly present in the nervous system, organs, and glands, and the CB2 receptor is found mostly within our immune system. These cellular areas of the cannabinoid system perform different tasks, but their mission is consistently the same; to maintain a balanced internal system. From the nervous system to the musculoskeletal system, we have more cannabinoid receptors that are multifunctional regulators in the human body than any other system.

Once these receptors were discovered, scientists began searching for the chemicals that would interact with them. Scientists call these various chemicals endocannabinoids. Our bodies naturally create these chemicals and they stimulate the receptors that reside in our organs. In contrast, phytocannabinoids are the primary chemical compounds found in all Cannabis sativa plants. There is no other plant that serves the multiple functions phytocannabinoids serve in the human body. Research has shown that introducing external phytocannabinoids like the many naturally occurring in hemp plants can be useful to support a variety of health issues.

What is Cannabinoid Deficiency?

Researchers are finding that when the body lacks endocannabinoids, it disrupts the body’s natural balance. They call this “cannabinoid deficiency.” This shortcoming can affect many aspects of one’s health, such as the body’s immune system, as well as certain kinds of pain and inflammation. The lack of endocannabinoids may be related to migraines and headaches too. A lot of individuals experience discomfort and pain on a regular basis, and this can sometimes be because of a disruption in the body’s natural balance.

Hemp Oil

Many people are turning to natural remedies in an attempt to counteract these imbalances, and Agricultural Hemp has become a leader in this arena. In December 2018, Congress passed the new Farm Bill that included legalizing Industrial/Agricultural hemp in all 50 States. Agricultural hemp is classified as the non-psychoactive Cannabis sativa plant. Agricultural hemp is a remarkable plant that contains over 100 different phytonutrients and phytocannabinoids. Hemp oil is derived from this plant, and Functional Remedies produces full-spectrum pure hemp oil using superior methods and superior plant genetics. Our nutrient-rich hemp plants come from decades of optimization and regularly produce four times more phytonutrients than competitor plants. These numbers have been tested and verified repeatedly by third-party labs.

While hemp oil benefits are extensive (no psychotropic side effects, no major health risks, ease of access, ease of options, etc.), it will not be the perfect fit for everyone who explores it. It’s very rare, but a small segment of people who have taken higher doses of hemp oil have experienced dry mouth, lightheadedness or drowsiness. There is some research that suggests that at higher doses of cannabinoids, people with Parkinson’s disease may find their unwanted muscle movements and tremors worse. If you’re a person who’s suffering from more serious ailments, or even if you just have questions, consulting with your doctor before experimenting with hemp products may be the best thing for you. We recommend when starting out using hemp oil or capsules to use the lowest dosage at the same time every day and see what benefits you gain.
