Does Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Interact with Medications?

The benefits of full-spectrum hemp oil are many. However, with the recent popularity and explosion of help oil products, the question of “does hemp oil interact with medications?” may be on your mind.

Whenever you add a supplement of any kind to your diet and daily life, it’s always good to do diligent research or consult with your physician to get all the facts on how it can impact other medications you’re taking. Supplements can and do interact with medications in different ways, and even some fruits and foods can as well.

If you’re wondering if the full-spectrum hemp oil interacts with your medications, the short answer is: possible. The long answer truly depends on what you’re taking and the dosage. Full-spectrum hemp oil can change the way your body processes medications, rendering some inactive and others overactive.

Full-spectrum hemp oil, which contains CBD, has been proven to be especially helpful with pain, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and much more. If you’re taking full-spectrum hemp oil for any of these ailments, chances are you’re finding relief, but is there is conflict with your other medications?

Recent research has shown that there are few, if any, side effects of CBD and full-spectrum hemp oil. Everyone metabolizes medications and supplements differently, however, and there are some medications that can be negatively impacted by consuming CBD.

How does CBD in full-spectrum hemp oil interact with medications?

To understand how CBD interacts with medications, it’s important to first understand how the body metabolizes medications.

The way the body breaks down medications will happen at a different rate for everyone, but the process is the same. The body produces enzymes to metabolize everything that’s consumed. If the enzymes are influenced by a beverage, food, supplement, or medication, the process will change slightly and the body’s metabolic rate can change. CBD specifically blocks a family of enzymes found in the liver, called cytochrome CYP450, which are involved in metabolizing many medications.

The liver does its fair share of breaking substances down, as well, but if the efficiency of the enzymes are affected, this can cause metabolization of medications to either slow down or speed up. Compounds in grapefruit, however, do the same thing.

This family of enzymes, the CYP450 family, includes an enzyme that is indeed impacted by CBD: CYP3A4. This enzyme is responsible for metabolizing around an estimated 60% of pharmaceutical medications. If you’re also taking a full-spectrum hemp oil, however, this can inhibit CYP3A4 and it can’t work as effectively to break down the medications as intended. This can result in too little or too much of the medication in your body, even if you’re taking the prescribed dosage.

Effects may vary, however, and research is still in the early stages on humans in order to fully understand at which dosage and which medications specifically can be affected.
