When you raise your glass to cheers friends, is there CBD in it? If you’re like many in the US, you’ve enjoyed a cocktail or beer with a dash of CBD at a hip bar. CBD infused beer and cocktails are popping up everywhere right now and there’s a good reason for it. From skin care and culinary delights, to coffee and cocktails, the benefits of CBD are seemingly universal.
What are CBD Cocktails?
Cannabidiol or CBD is a property of cannabis that is being studied for its wide array of healing properties. It is gaining so much popularity as a natural and healthy alternative for many ailments. It doesn’t get you “high” like a joint would, and you can even buy it online.
CBD (cannabidiol) is an active chemical compound found in the marijuana plant and industrial hemp plant called a cannabinoid. It is one of the most dominant of over 100 cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are a diverse class of chemical compounds that occur naturally in the body (endocannabinoids) and in several plants including cannabis.
All cannabinoids behave differently, but CBD is quite unique in that it doesn’t bond directly with the cannabinoid receptors. This is when the body is encouraged to produce endocannabinoids. This natural production of endocannabinoids is much better for the body as the production is native.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is composed of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced in the body such as anandamide and 2-AG), enzymes that synthesize and degrade the cannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2) found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The main purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis in the body.
CBD and Alcohol
Why, exactly, would you want CBD in your cocktail? Is it even safe to mix CBD and alcohol?
Interestingly enough, scientists and researchers have discovered that it may actually be better to mix CBD with alcohol. Additionally, people are reporting that the hangover is lessened with the infusion of CBD in alcoholic drinks.
A recent article in Vice News stated, “One study in the journal Psychopharmacology found that people who had alcohol and a CBD capsule had lower blood alcohol levels than those who had alcohol alone, though they experienced the same impairments in cognition and motor coordination.”
Sound too good to be true? Believe it!
When CBD is mixed with alcohol in beer or a cocktail, or even wine, a euphoric feeling takes over that is like being intoxicated but with a side of floating in a hammock on a tropical island.
CBD also enhances the drink’s flavor and adds a bit of earthiness that is both pleasant and complimentary, no matter what you’re sipping on.
CBD cocktails are popping up in bars across the US, but if you don’t live in a state where cannabis is legal or widely accepted, it may be hard to find an establishment that serves them. Making them at home is easy and fun, and we’ve got some tasty recipes for you to try.
However, as with any substance that can affect your inhibitions, there is caution in drinking multiple beverages with CBD infused in them. The more you drink, the more and more CBD you’ll be consuming with each drink. Some people can be sensitive to CBD and when mixed with alcohol, that can lead to a “go home” scenario quickly. Start with a low dose and give it about 45 minutes until you decide to have another drink.
Regardless, crafting your own cocktails at home with CBD is fun and these homemade CBD cocktail recipes are sure to elevate the vibe of any party, all while entertaining and relaxing your guests.
Homemade CBD Cocktail Recipes
Essentially, adding CBD to any typical cocktail counts as an infusion. But why not get creative and try something new overall? These recipes have a modern twist on classic cocktails that you know and love. Your next dinner party or girl’s night in just got a whole new kick!
As a general rule for newbies and your guests, keep the CBD dose fairly low. Although it is safe to mix CBD with alcohol, it’s still not a good idea to go overboard. Stick to around 20 mg or less per session. Try CBD in one cocktail, and if you want to have another, skip CBD in the second. The more you consume, the more you’re going to feel and there is more potential for things to take a turn.
When adding CBD to cocktails, it is best to use a tincture. This is CBD infused within a carrier oil like MCT oil, coconut oil, or hemp oil. The oil will sit on the top of the cocktail unless you use a suspended CBD tincture which has an alcohol base.
All recipes make 1 serving. Please drink responsibly.
