Hemp oil and the entourage effect

If you’ve researched hemp oil at all you’ve probably come across references to the entourage effect. But do you know what it is? And more importantly, do you know how beneficial hemp oil that maximizes the entourage effect is?

Join me as we dip into the entourage effect.

Whole plant hemp oil

When the Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, he could have been talking about whole plant hemp oil.

Hemp contains over 113 cannabinoids. Each cannabinoid has a different effect on the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. And so, each one can have different beneficial aspects. For example, some are widely considered to have pain relieving, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure and anti-nausea effects. Some research into epileptic seizure management is focusing heavily on unique cannabinoids in the hemp phyto-nutrient spectrum, and other research points to anti-fungal and anti-convulsant properties.

When taken individually, the isolated cannabinoid that some producers sell is likely to have some beneficial elements, but if you take only an isolate product as opposed to a full-spectrum, whole-plant hemp oil, you’re missing out.

The entourage effect

The entourage effect was first mentioned in 1998 by Israeli scientists Shimon Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam. In a nutshell, the basic idea is that the cannabinoids found within the hemp plant all work together, and affect the body in a similar way to the body’s own endocannabinoid system.

The theory was expanded by Wagner and Ulrich-Merzenich, who defined the four basic mechanisms of whole plant extract synergy as:

  • The ability to affect multiple targets within the body
  • The ability to improve the absorption of active ingredients
  • The ability to overcome bacterial defense mechanisms
  • The ability to minimize adverse side effects

But what does this mean for someone who takes hemp oil?

You’ve probably read testimonials or reviews of hemp oil where the consumer lists a wide range of ailments and then says that since taking full-spectrum oil, all of their symptoms have improved. Maybe you’ve thought they were full of something other than hemp!

But this may be the entourage effect at work. Each cannabinoid is exhibiting its unique beneficial properties and multiple symptoms appear to be affected by that.

Functional Remedies and the entourage effect

Over the past 25 years, Functional Remedies has researched, bred and selected hemp plants that maximize the entourage effect. Our lipid infusion process  ensures that we capture all the cannabinoids present in those plants, to allow our hemp oil products to deliver the beneficial properties of the whole plant.
