CBD oil and the entourage effect

CBD oil and the entourage effect

If you’ve researched CBD oil at all you’ve probably come across references to the entourage effect. But do you know what it is? And more importantly, do you know how beneficial hemp CBD oil that maximizes the entourage effect is?

Join me as we dip into the entourage effect.

Whole plant CBD

When the Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, he could have been talking about whole plant hemp CBD oil.

Hemp contains over 113 cannabinoids, but the main ones you’re probably familiar with are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Some of the other interesting cannabinoids are cannabidiol acid (CBDA), cannabidivarin (CBDV), cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV).

Each cannabinoid has a different effect on the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. And so, each one can have different beneficial aspects. For example, CBD is widely considered to have pain relieving, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure and anti-nausea effects. Some research into epileptic seizure management is focusing heavily on CBDV. And CBC may have anti-fungal and anticonvulsant properties.

When taken individually, the isolated CBD that some producers sell is likely to have the beneficial properties that CBD has, but if you take CBD isolate you’re missing out.

The entourage effect

The entourage effect was first mentioned in 1998 by Israeli scientists Shimon Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam. In a nutshell, the basic idea is that the cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant all work together, and affect the body in a similar way to the body’s own endocannabinoid system.

The theory was expanded by Wagner and Ulrich-Merzenich, who defined the four basic mechanisms of whole plant extract synergy as:

  • The ability to affect multiple targets within the body
  • The ability to improve the absorption of active ingredients
  • The ability to overcome bacterial defense mechanisms
  • The ability to minimize adverse side effects

But what does this mean for someone who takes hemp CBD oil?

All together now

You’ve probably read testimonials or reviews of CBD oil where the consumer lists a wide range of ailments and then says that since taking CBD oil, all of their symptoms have improved. Maybe you’ve thought they were full of something other than CBD!

But this may be the entourage effect at work. Each cannabinoid is exhibiting its unique beneficial properties and multiple symptoms appear to be affected by that.
